Alternatives have tended to grow from a very technical engineering foundation, with the majority of their efforts going into conquering the challenges of effective energy capture and conversion rather that the design and build of cost-effective supply chains. Now the challenge for alternative producers is to identify and liberate enough systemic waste to be able to compete on price, and generate enough volume to create sufficient cash to fund their ongoing engineering and infrastructural development.
